The OPR Journal publishes writing by people outside the organization on prisons, detention, and justice in Somalia. Here is how it works.

What we publish

First-hand accounts of detention. Research on prison conditions, sentencing, pre-trial detention, or the courts. Legal analysis of Somali or international law as it applies to people in custody. Reporting on specific cases, facilities, or institutions. Work on the treatment of minorities, women, children, and journalists in detention.

What we don't publish

Opinion without evidence. Pieces that name a detainee or family without their informed consent. Anything that could identify a source who has asked not to be identified. Work already published elsewhere, unless you hold the rights and tell us.

How it works

Pitch. Send two or three paragraphs to journal@opr.org.so: what the piece shows, what it's based on, and why it matters. Attach the draft if you have one.

Review. OPR reads every pitch. We reply within two weeks with a yes, a no, or questions. We check facts against our own records where we can.

Edit. Accepted pieces are edited with you, not around you. Nothing is published that you haven't approved.

Publish. Your piece appears in the Journal under your name, or under a pseudonym if you ask for one, and stays online.

Your safety

If publishing under your own name could put you or your family at risk, tell us. We publish under pseudonyms, remove identifying detail, and never share a contributor's identity or contact details with anyone. We'd rather run a piece anonymously than not run it.
